2025 Jacksonville Jaguars Training Camp Preview

The Liam Coen era is officially upon us as the Jaguars begin their first training camp under Coen. The youngest staff in the NFL will look to create and establish stability, building a culture that can lead to the consistency the franchise has been searching for since Tom Coughlin roamed the sidelines. Coen is billed as an offensive savant who has produced effective offenses everywhere he's been—from UMass to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and every stop in between. While he's not typically viewed as a QB guru, every offense he has produced is very QB-friendly. Can Coen finally be the one to turn Trevor Lawrence into the player he is destined to be?

Newly appointed General Manager James Gladstone, viewed as the "boy wonder," comes from the Los Angeles Rams' front office, where he honed a keen eye for talent under the tutelage of Rams GM Les Snead. Gladstone has taken the reins and looks to make moves that will push the Jaguars to an AFC South division title and make them playoff contenders. From drafting the best player in the NFL draft in Travis Hunter, adding one of the best nickelbacks in the NFL in Jourdan Lewis, to bolstering the offensive line with Patrick Mekari and Robert Hainsey, roster moves have been made that look bright for this team as the collective management team leads the Jaguars in their first season running the show.

Three Storylines to follow throughout Training Camp:

Can Coen Fix Trevor?

The hiring of Coen was done with Trevor Lawrence in mind. Can Coen figure out how to get the most out of Trevor? How can Coen help him play with consistency, ensuring he performs at his highest level more often than not? What will be Coen’s approach and scheme to bring out the best in Trevor? Trevor has all the tools to be a Top 10 quarterback in the league. His biggest weakness, however, is making the easy throws consistently. Trevor can make any throw on the field and do it at a high level, but consistently making the routine throws remains one of his biggest challenges. How will Coen incorporate a run game that has been nonexistent since Trevor was drafted to Jacksonville?

Did Gladstone and Coen do enough to upgrade the offensive line?

The one position that has plagued the Jacksonville Jaguars for the past decade, at a minimum, has been the offensive line. Protecting Trevor is the most important task for Coen and Gladstone in their first season in charge. This team will go as far as Trevor takes us, and protecting him at all costs is crucial. Secondly, enhancing the run game will take pressure off Trevor and allow him to play to his strengths, which I believe is playing off of play-action. Gladstone made it a priority to add some new pieces to the offensive line group: OT Fred Johnson, OT Patrick Mekari, OG Robert Hainsey, OG Wyatt Millum, and OT Chuma Udoga. These aren’t household names, so it’s a valid question to ask whether Gladstone did enough.

What defense shows up?

In 2023, the defense was ranked 22nd in total defense, 8th in turnovers, and 9th in rushing defense. By no means was it perfect, but in 2024, we witnessed a historically bad defense that ranked 31st in total defense, 25th in rushing defense, and 32nd in turnovers—essentially the same core on defense. What changed? Defensive coordinators. After the 2023 season, the Jaguars moved on from Mike Caldwell and hired Ryan Nielsen. What does this mean? I believe there are reliable tools, and it was more about the craftsman than the tools themselves. In 2025, the new staff hired Anthony Campanile, who I believe is an upgrade over the previous two defensive coordinators. With the additions of players like Travis Hunter, Jourdan Lewis, and Emmanuel Ogbah, along with the returning core of Tyson Campbell, Travon Walker, and Foye Oluokun, this defense might show significant growth this season.
